Notice Your Focus (Weekly Challenger, 3/17/2008)

Happy St. Patrick’s Day – and more importantly…

This Wednesday is my 20th wedding anniversary.

Twentieth. I must confess, there were days (weeks, months) when I doubted we’d make it this far. We’ve had our ups and downs, our good times and our bad times. And yet, here we are looking back over twenty years.

It’s interesting. The roughest times in our marriage have not been the external upheavals. When things are challenging, we pull together. It’s when things are going along just fine - the “boring” stretches - that things start to get, well, uneasy. I think it’s because we become aware of, and perhaps even focused on, the little annoyances. The pesky details. The lack of things rather than the fullness of them.

So this week, in celebration of my anniversary, notice what you’re focused on in your relationships and in your life. Are they the big, important things (he’s loving, respectful, loyal, a hard worker…) or the pesky details (I wish he’d get rid of that shirt!)?

P.S. Have you voted for your favorite Weekly Challenger yet? I reviewed all my Weekly Challengers from the last 5 years and picked out my 6 favorites - that was a challenge! Now it’s your turn. The winning Challenger will be featured sometime in April. It may not be a presidential election, but please vote anyway! Get details at www.weeklychallengers.com/wc_favorites_vote.html.
